Even though graphic design is not my primary focus, I was still lucky enough to be able to challenge myself by picking up new skills that are more computer based.
For this particular project, we were assigned to choose a speech and to turn it into a broadside.
I felt inspired from my recent trip to the Philippines as I got to visit the birthplace of one of the national heroes of the Philippines, Jose Rizal. I found one poetic speech of his that I was incredibly drawn to, that being the speech you see above To My Fellow Youth or Sa Aking Mga Bata.
Rizal heavily emphasizes to the youth of the importance of preserving the native language and to keep this loving connection to the culture. I find that this is very much relevant in today’s world as many people, including myself are disconnected from the culture, which is heartbreaking as I don’t fluently speak tagalog/pangasinan or entirely understand it. BUT I strive to rebuild this connection through my work by doing lots of research and just creating!
For an intro graphic design course, our final project was branding and I chose to focus my brand on something I love very much, ceramics!
One of the things we were required to do was make a business card mock up. Design wise, I thought of earthy and vibrant colors and typefaces that are readable, as well as elements that coincide with the studio name.
Overall, I found this project to be challenging as it required me to delve more into technicality which was something I was not used to, but with all my complaints, part of me secretly enjoyed the process.
This was one of my first ever graphic design posters, the project was a call to action. I decided to focus on fast fashion as it is of relevance in today’s world and something I felt deeply disturbed by. This poster went through lots of iterations as any project goes, but for just starting out, I’m happy with the result.
