Jacel Anne Bulatao (b.2002) is a San Diego based artist who primarily utilizes ceramics as her medium of expression. Through this imaginative lens, her work explores the shared experiences and the historical significance of her cultural identity as a Filipino-American. She is currently an undergraduate at San Diego State University majoring in Multimedia Art. Her artistic background comes from a very young age of 5 when she attended Zamorano Fine Arts Academy, although it was not until attending the San Diego School of Creative Performing Arts (SDSCPA) where her artistic journey truly began.

BIO

Jacel strives to depict these narratives through her sculptures by displaying a combination of specific cultural intergenerational experiences with the surreal nature. She does this by using cultural symbology and mixed media elements. Her ceramic sculptures aim to reflect this theme of introspection as she feels eager to find what is underneath the culture’s surface and how the diaspora ultimately resulted in this feeling of disconnection Filipino-Americans feel today. She seeks to tell the stories of the people who came before her, along with the people she shares these experiences with.

With these curiosities on mind, her research allows her to feel even closer to her culture, as well as provide her this ability to share this connection with the people who view her work.
